Tooth whitening can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make a complete colour change but it will lighten the existing shade.

There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different and just as our hair and skin colours vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant white teeth, and our teeth can also become discoloured as we get older. Your teeth can also be stained on the surface through food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant. Smoking can also stain teeth.

Here at The Loughton Dental Centre we can give you a beautiful white smile. You will be delighted with the results from the two whitening systems on offer at our centre.

In-surgery whitening

ZOOM! - as seen on 10 Years Younger.

This is a laser power whitening system that is undertaken in the surgery with amazing results. The procedure will take approximately one hour to complete. You can enjoy watching a DVD or listen to music whilst your teeth are whitening. Your teeth can lighten up to nine shades instantly with this procedure.

The procedure takes about one and a half hours in the surgery. We will begin by ensuring you are comfortable, and then we will take around 15 minutes carefully isolating your teeth from your lips and gums. The Zoom Power Whitening Gel is applied onto the teeth and the specially designed light is used to activate the gel. This is done over three fifteen minute cycles.

The advantage is that the effect is immediate but it is not as easy to control the shade of the teeth. It is usually possible to lighten the teeth by approximately 4 shades by using this method although it can vary from person to person.

Home whitening

Daywhite - This is an individual tray that is undertaken in the comfort of your own home. Individual trays are made and a gel solution added before you insert the tray. Many patients prefer to insert the tray at night. You will need to leave the tray in for an hour each time you use them and you will start to see results after you have used them a few times. You can keep using the tray until you are happy with the whiteness of your teeth.

An impression of your teeth is taken in the surgery to make the trays for your whitening gel.

The home whitening system requires you to apply a small amount of gel into the trays - which need to be worn for half an hour, twice a day for two weeks.

The advantage of this method is that is it possible to control the degree of whitening; you can stop when you are happy with the shade of the teeth and top up when required.

All tooth whitening procedures are easy and enjoyable. In a small number of cases you may experience some sensitivity, but this will not last long.
